RealNewPoetry Submission guidelines (for RealNewMusic 2011)

1. Poem length: 60-120 words.
2. English language poems only.
3. Maximum of five (5) entries per poet.
4. Entries must be original and unpublished--simultaneous submissions OK.
5. Because RealNewMusic is a regional festival, we accept submissions from the 900xx – 931xx zip code regions only, roughly from San Diego to Santa Barbara, California.
6. Poets retain all rights to their work when entering the RNP poetry contest. (See Waiver Statement below)
7. Winning poem will be featured at the 2011 RealNewMusic Festival in September, 2011, where three to four composers will set the poem to music and perform their pieces during the song cycle section of the festival. The winning poem will also be reprinted in the festival program and on the RealNewPoetry Web site. Winning poet will receive a CD copy of the song cycle.
9. Submissions due date: December 31, 2010.
10. One winner only. Winner announced: January, 2011.

Suggested elements for a successful poem in this contest:
a. avoid broad abstractions; we prefer descriptive/concrete language
b. avoid obvious song-lyric structures (verse-chorus-bridge); some repetition is OK
c. avoid graphic language: PG-rated poetry is preferred; R-rated poetry OK; NC-17 poetry will not be considered.


Waiver Statement

By submitting my poem(s) electronically to the RealNewPoetry contest, I agree to the following: I give my permission for my work to be considered for publication as stipulated in the Submission Guidelines. If my work is accepted, I consent to grant first publication rights to RealNewPoetry but understand that I will maintain copyright.


How to Submit:

Poems must be submitted via e-mail to be considered.

E-mail your submission(s) to tmcallinan@realnewpoetry.com as an attachment (Microsoft Word files only).
In the subject line of your e-mail, write “RNP Submission.”
In the e-mail message, provide the following information:
Full legal name, phone number, and street address (including city and zip code).
If you wish to be published under a pseudonym, please indicate the name you wish to have attached to your poem.
State the titles of the poems included in the attachment. Poems that exceed the maximum word limit will not be considered for publication.
